For our juniors not competing at Regions this Saturday is choose your own event day, scroll down below for full information and a copy of the program to choose your own event!

We have 48 athletes entered for Region Track and Field, a 45% increase on previous years. Well done to the Committee, Age group leaders, and parents on this awesome result. Any parent needing more information before regions, including club Uniform, please see Dannie McKinnon 0407867852 or Katie Clarke 0403819391

This week for Choose Your Own Event day, we want to encourage athletes to choose the events they will be competing in on the 12th and 13th February at Region Track and Field. The athletes from younger age groups or that aren’t entered at Region should choose events to help reach their PBs levels or simply their favourite events. Please find a copy of the program to choose your own event this weekend, print it off and bring it along!

It’s a busy day and a week where we need parent helpers at events rather than following their children around at each event. Age Group Managers will ensure the athletes get to all their correct events. If parents can assist by completing the attached and sending it with the athletes to give to their Age Group Managers Saturday morning. For those choosing Javelin, Walks, or 200m/300m Hurdles make sure you check the earlier starting times.

For more information, make sure to check the Yarra Ranges Athletics Clubhouse before the day.

Personal Bests

With only a few rounds left of our summer season for both Senior and Littles, we are seeing more and more awesome results every week!

Last weekend we saw Littles and Seniors go back to their summer seasons, as well as the annual Two Bays Trail Run event which saw a lot of activity from YRA. Scroll down to check out the full race report!

Congratulations to the athletes who reached the first tier of PB’s the week before Christmas and were presented their awards last week. (Those that weren’t there will receive their awards this week)

Two Bays Trail Run Report

An absolutely MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who helped last weekend at the Two Bays carpark. Katie, Zoe and Michael Clarke, Susan Taylor, Bryan Ackerly, Tim, Kirrily and Acacia Anderson-Bonsor, Erika Bedyn, Luke Hunter, Olivia Twining and Jamie Strudley, we are so appreciative of your early starts and amazing traffic management!

We were extremely excited to see James Laven take home FIRST place in the 28k event, as well as bagging a two minute course record, running an amazing 1:42.31. James wrote a race report which he shared below.

_____________________________

Two Bays has been an event I have thought about running for several years now, but it was the desire to add some variety to my summer season that saw me finally commit to the 2022 iteration – and I was certainly glad I did!

Once I had entered, my preparation was not dissimilar to my usual weekly routine – although living in the Dandenong Ranges and having a real soft-spot for trail running certainly helped! However, as a race I also sought to perform well in, I considered it vital to run the course beforehand. Many thanks to Harry, Gus and Sam for joining me for a long-run reconnaissance, and a huge thanks to Max for driving us back to Dromana! This run served as not only a fun and social evening amongst the Peninsula’s most beautiful areas but also allowed me to devise my race strategy whilst familiarising myself with the different elements of the course – which I considered to be invaluable come race day.

The morning treated us to some sublime running conditions and after soaking up the excited (if not slightly nervous) energy in Dromana Park the race got underway.

I decided to put in a spirited although measured effort for the climb up to Arthurs Seat to ascertain how I was feeling for the morning. Fortunately, I was feeling strong so after treating myself to the picturesque views towards the top of the climb I decided to aggressively attack the descent. I continued to work hard until the Browns RD crossing where along the rolling terrain of Hyslops RD I eased up slightly to refuel and to place myself in a position to attack the Greens Bush section.

The rolling single-trail and being firmly immersed amongst the flora and fauna made Greens Bush a genuinely enjoyable portion of the race and one in which I could settle into a rhythm and seek to build ground in. The final section from Boneo RD to the finish was undoubtedly tough but sighting the ocean and later promising glimpses of the lighthouse reassured me that the finish was close and encouraged me to keep pushing. After successfully clearing the aptly named ‘Stairs of Spontaneous Poetry’ I knew that the finish was tantalisingly close. As the scrub gave way to the welcoming sight of the finish arch, I was relieved and satisfyingly depleted. After a pretty healthy morning out on the trails I had achieved, if not exceeded my goals and expectations. I had fun, gave it a solid go and was fortunate enough to be rewarded for it.

Many thanks to my coach Brendan for all his hard work and dedication in getting me to this point. Also, a massive thanks to the entire event team and volunteers for all their hard work – the event was so well organised yet retained such a genuinely fun and supportive atmosphere which is a real credit to everyone involved. I would also like to congratulate everyone who ran and thank everyone who came out to support and spectate – it was a fantastic morning that I hope everyone enjoyed as much as I did!

I look forward to seeing everyone again in 2023!

This weekend, join us for Yarra Ranges Athletics combined event competition. This event is to give athletes an idea of what the State Combined Event is like which is open to U9-U16 athletes.

Combined Event is a competition which involves all athletes participating in 5-7 events, depending on age group. The table of what events athletes do on Saturday is in this newsletter.

Yarra Ranges gives out medals to our top 3 athletes in each age group. To be eligible for the medals, all athletes need to complete in every event. Each event is given a score from the Alberta Youth Scoring Table, every millisecond and centimetre gives a higher score.

We encourage everyone to give it their best try on Saturday. PB’s will be counted and contribute to the overall PB score for the 2021/2022 season. All athletes who compete on Saturday will be awarded a certificate and ribbons to 6th place. Presentation for this event will be at a later date, keep an eye on announcements in our newsletter and Facebook page, ‘Yarra Ranges Athletics Clubhouse’.

Good luck to all athletes! Do your best and have lots of Fun!!!

Make sure to check out the YRA Clubhouse Facebook page over the coming days to be up to date with the program. We look forward to seeing everyone for the combined event soon!

Weekly Newsletter – December 8

Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes enjoyed some sunshine interspersed with drizzle and cold winds on Saturday morning. The weather did not deter the smiles on the 150+ athletes who turned up at Morrison Reserve for a fun morning of athletics.

With the club combined events championships only a week away, athletes made the most of the opportunity to practice the events that make up the combined events schedule. Our athletes finally got the chance to try some discus and shotput events prior to the artificial turf being laid.

Our seniors were split between AVSL competitions at Knox and Keilor tracks.

A massive congratulations to all of our competing athletes at the AV 5000m champs last night, especially to James Laven and Harry Norman, taking home 4th and 6th place in the Men’s A Race respectively, and Olivia Twining, running 12th in the Women’s A Race.

The YRA Distance Crew has been absolutely on fire over the last few weeks, and we are extremely excited to see how the team can go over the rest of the summer season! If you missed last nights racing, check out the Men’s A, or Women’s A races by clicking on either here!

Two Bays Car Park Fundraiser

Cape Schanck – Sunday 16th January 2022

This will be the 6th year we have managed this and it is the best one day fundraiser that we do.

We raise over $2000 which goes directly to the club, but we need members to come and help either direct cars to park or be on the gate to take the $5 car parking fee.

The area is a one way in and out and about 400-500 cars are directed on the day.

If you are available to help, we offer a small amount to cover petrol and/or food costs on the day. We need about 5 people from 6am in the morning and an additional 3 from 9am till about 1pm.

If you can help for a couple of hours please get in touch with Katie Clarke on 0403 819391. It is a beautiful part of the world to explore when your shift is over. Big Thank you!!

Results

All results from Little Athletics are available through the Results HQ portal. All members have received details for logging in from Little Athletics Victoria (LAVic). If you haven’t received or can’t find the details call the LAVic office.

For new members who started on Trial the early results are being checked and re-entered. It is a manual process, so may take a few weeks for us to catch up.

If anyone, at anytime, believes some results are missing, please email results@yarrarangesathletics.org.au

Weekly Newsletter – December 1

Vic Milers

The spiritual “Home of PBs,” Hagenaeur Reserve in Box Hill put on quite the show last Thursday with the first meet of Vic Milers Club. For the uninitiated, VMC run meets in the evening during the summer season occasionally, and there is no other place to try and knock off a PB!

With some precise seeding, almost all of our distance crew walked away with PBs for a night well spent. YRA was represented by 16 athletes and all enjoyed the evening watching each other race.

YRA Winter Athletics Cross Country Season 2021

Our local club season of Cross Country was cut short by lockdowns this year. Despite the uncertainty at different times, we hosted 10 rounds of Cross Country, with at least 2 races at each of our 4 venues. Once again, this season Croydon Athletics Club joined us for 2021. We also had good participation from most age groups at Knox Open Day, resulting in several individual and team medals, but most of all smiles and cheers for YRA athletes. After missing a complete season in 2020 we were grateful for what racing could happen, realising that when we can’t host races, we miss all the smiles, friendship and strong competition that our Yarra Ranges kids bring to each day of Cross Country.

Participant numbers for our winter Cross Country are rising each year. This years shortened season saw 187 individuals recording almost 1000 race results. More than 100 finishers were seen at 7 rounds. It shows that the program that we bring during Winter is attractive and successful. Thanks to our families that enjoy a Saturday morning run, particularly those who invite family and friends, helping to introduce new families and athletes to our Winter season.

Unfortunately, the regular Region and State competitions were cancelled. Knox Open Day was the highlight competition of the winter season for Yarra Ranges. Because of the dedicated athletes who showed up to race in our club colours we managed to retain the trophy for the 7th year! Waverley Athletics club were out in force and the points swung between the 2 clubs all morning. With 1 race to go our U8’s stormed home to win the Trophy! A wonderful day was had in the sunshine by all. 36 athletes, 6 team medals and 9 individual podium places. What a great club!

Every week there is a large group of volunteers that set up the Cross Country course and help our athletes. Thank you to Mr Cross Country, our very own Rob Belli who we have missed during the summer months when he has been working for Little Athletics as the development officer. Our early morning crew, Mike Willey, Alan Harris, Joel Johnson, Russell Van Bert and Michael Clarke helped to set the course ready for the fun. To our marshals, tag givers, recorders, welcome crew and flag retrievers. Thank you for a wonderful Cross Country season in 2021. Onwards to Summer Track and Field and we hope to see more smiling faces and PB’s in the coming year!

This Saturday

This week’s program is program 1 with some changes with the returns of throws for all ages. Please check the clubhouse page for more information in coming days.

We are delaying the Combined round by a week as some groups haven’t had a chance to compete in events that make up the Combined Events program.

We will plan for Combined to take place the 11 December and Program 2 on the 18th December.
