A Foggy Start Last Saturday

A foggy start to the latest round of cross country for Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes as they took on the challenges presented at Margaret Lewis Reserve in Coldstream. Some mud, a couple of hills and eventually some sunshine made for a fantastic morning of cross country.

XCR

Our senior team travelled to Cruden Farm, Langwarrin for Round 4 of the XCR season.

The club had 18 members competing including debut cross country participation from Jared Byrne, Chris Grundy and Abi Hyndman.

Always a fun but testing course, made even more so by the recent rains making for very soft underfoot conditions. The course was a little different to previous years meaning not as many shoes lost in mud pit and much faster times.

Congratulation to the medallists!

It also looks like our open men have won both divisions (3 & 6) to retain their respective positions at the top of the ladder.

Next Weekend

Our Saturday morning cross country will be at Lillydale Lake.

Make sure to stay tuned to the YRA Clubhouse Facebook page should there be any changes to events due to COVID restrictions.

All Schools Cross Country Championships Next Week

Next weekend we will have a number of athletes representing their school at the Victorian All Schools Cross Country Championships at Bundoora. They will be joined by our open athletes as they compete for the club at the Victorian Cross Country champs.

The Olympics are nearly here! Watch the athletics competition in the second week of the Games and be inspired to compete in the After School Olympics

Last Saturday

Thanks to some quick handiwork from YRA’s resident chainsaw extraordinaires we were able to enjoy another round at our home venue – Morrison Reserve. A huge thank you to the XC team for getting us back up there despite some rather large trees impeding the course!

This Saturday

Yarra Ranges Athletics cross country will be at Margaret Lewis Reserve. We look forward to seeing everyone down there!

Arrive by 8:45am for races to begin by 9:00am.

Don’t forget to bring some warm clothes to change into afterwards. Coldstream will be pretty chilly!

XCR

Best of luck to our Seniors back and racing this weekend at people’s favourite venue; Cruden Farm. Make sure you don’t lose your shoes in the mud pit! We look forward to seeing the smiles, the grimaces, and the excitement as we return to the XC circuit.

Seniors, please note that following this week of XC there will be XC at Bundoora Park on Saturday 17th July. Entries for this close NEXT WEDNESDAY at 11:59am.

The 2021 Heritage Round is at Cruden Farm, hosting 8km and 12km distances. The grounds of Cruden Farm offer athletes a challenging course with a mixture of different terrains to accompany the beautiful areas encompassing the farm.

The change of date for this event (from Saturday 26 June to Saturday 10 July 2021) means there has been a long layoff since Lardner Park. Therefore, we will be offering an invitational non-XCR scoring 8km event at Cruden Farm, also on Saturday 10 July 2021, for Open Men and Women, W40, M40 and M50+, in addition to the previously scheduled events.

This event is an excellent opportunity for clubs to showcase their history, and we encourage each club to do so again in 2021.

Last weekend

Yarra Ranges Athletics returned to their favourite course at Lillydale Lake on the weekend. Some fantastic clearing work by council staff meant the normal course was possible, albeit with some additional slippery and muddy sections.

Athletes were determined to run hard with the prospect of a choccy frog for a course PB, so there was plenty of intensity and lots of mud. Well done to all our finishers, helpers and the set up crew for another fun morning of cross country.

This weekend

We return to Morrison Reserve where we hope to find some more mud and puddles.

Please note that there may be changes to the course due to storm damage. We endeavour to keep the course as close to its original as possible.

Arrive by 8:45am for races to begin by 9:00am.

Don’t forget to bring some warm clothes to change into afterwards!

Club training

Club training continues with 6-12yo training on Wednesdays at Morrison Reserve from 4pm with Kate.

Open age training on Tuesdays from 5.30pm at Morrison Reserve and Thursdays from 5.30 at Victoria Rd Primary School gym.

After two weeks of lockdown

Followed by a storm for the ages, Yarra Ranges Athletics managed to bring some fun back to the community over the weekend. The return of Saturday morning cross country, last week at Elizabeth Bridge Reserve in Kilsyth, bought joy and fun to all the athletes and parents attending.

The course was in spectacular cross country condition, sunny overhead and very wet underfoot! With choccy frogs up for grabs for a course PB, the athletes were keen to have a crack. Athletes started in COVID safe waves of less than 20 making for many interesting races.

Well done to all who participated, we look forward to seeing you this coming Saturday at Lillydale Lake.

Cruden farm was scheduled to be this weekend as well but AV has been postponed it until 10th July.

Club training continues with 6-12yo training on Wednesdays at Morrison Reserve from 4pm with Kate and open age training on Tuesdays from 5.30pm at Morrison Reserve and Thursdays from 5.30 at Victoria Rd Primary School gym.

LAVic Club Excellence nominations

It is with absolute pleasure that I can confirm that we have entered two of our club members into the 2021 LAVic Centre Excellence Awards. These two people are well known for their hard work amongst our community and it is so important that we celebrate their efforts. Their passion for athletics knows no bounds and we are so grateful to have their passionate and talented hands with us.

Our nominee for the Centre Volunteer of the Year award goes to Bryan Ackerly. If centres are ever lucky enough to have someone like Bryan come along, they are truly blessed, as there could not possibly be too many people like him.

Bryan is quite simply always there. If there is a Yarra Ranges Athletics activity, he is there. His presence is not as a spectator, or passenger, and definitely not to be in the spotlight. He is a doer, a fixer, a solution maker. In weekly competition his specialty is as technical expert for all things timing, sound, electronics and equipment.

Bryan is a critical contributor to the racing experience of our athletes, ensuring results are captured accurately and helping them share in the excitement of PB performances as they gather around his customised display.

Something that may not be known about Bryan is that he has never been a parent of an athlete in Little Athletics, yet he stays involved because he enjoys making a difference. He is a year-round contributor, and is actively involved in both Summer and Winter competition.

Bryan is an amazing and positive influence around the athletes of all ages, encouraging them to be their best and showing them how to enjoy the sport, and a wonderful example of the joy that can be had from volunteerism.

Our nominee for the Coach of the Year, and Bryan Neighbour Centre Coach of the Year awards goes to Kate Downward. In a year when most things, including athletics were disrupted, Kate went to incredible lengths to keep our families and athletes active.

Not only through regular weekly coaching aimed at those athletes first developing a training habit, but also those stretching into their first experiences of competing beyond the Centre, at Region and State level competition.

In the last 12 months Kate has shown a keen determination to prevent lockdown and restrictions from completely cutting athletics off from club members and families. And she succeeded with flying colours – by hosting weekly live skills training sessions via our club Facebook page, Kate was the reassuring and reliable face of athletics coaching in a time when there was lots of uncertainty and disruption.

When training and competition were able to resume, Kate was a key contributor to helping us navigate the changing restrictions and to identify what and how we could host athletics, safely and effectively within the protocols at each stage.

She has an amazing ability to lift the confidence and enthusiasm of those around her. Without being a ‘larger than life’ personality, her quiet strength and determination makes her athletes trust her advice, listen to her instructions and try their best to improve weekly.

Kate is someone who has an idea, and makes it happen, without waiting for others to do the hard work, she shows how to get it done. Her reliability builds trust in those around her, and so easily brings others along in the capacity as helpers.

Kate and Bryan, how unbelievably fortunate we are to have you as a part of our club. It is passionate volunteers like Kate and Bryan that make athletics the inclusive, rewarding, and incredible sport that it is. On behalf of the committee, and whole YRA community, I extend my warmest gratitude and appreciation to you both. Thank you!

Max Savill-Bentley

President

Next round

We will be returning to Lillydale Lake this weekend for another round of cross country.

With thanks to the Shire for cleaning up the storm damage, the course shouldn’t require too many changes.

Remember to arrive early and bring a change of clothes, it will be a rainy morning – perfect conditions for XC!

Weekly Newsletter – June 17

A storm to remember, and back to competition!

We hope that everyone in the community is coping with the recent catastrophic storm event. The profound effect that this has had on tens of thousands of people in our immediate area is hard to comprehend.

It is something that I’m sure we all take for granted when enjoying the beautiful trails around Mt Evelyn, Lilydale and Silvan – the assumption that the trees that are above you are going to stay there! We are extremely lucky to have had no loss of life in the Yarra Ranges through this event.

To all of our members, please do not hesitate to contact us if you need the use of our power and showers through this time.

With the further easing of restrictions, it’s exciting to know that we can get back into doing what we love. YRA Cross Country WILL BE RETURNING THIS SATURDAY.

There are some details that still need to be finalised, but here is what we can share right now.

  1. Cross Country with YRA will be on!! YES
  2. Location is ELIZABETH BRIDGE RESERVE, DURHAM ROAD….Start time will still be 8.45am, and first race around 9am.
  3. The format will be based on the guidance received between now and race morning. The good news is community sport is an approved activity, so it will just be a case of waiting for further information on adjustments that may (or may not) be required.
  4. Keep checking for updates, and be ready for Cross Country on Saturday. Make sure you are familiar with QR check-in via Service Victoria app. Please cooperate with our volunteers if there are changes to our normal routine.
  5. If you have questions please comment here or send to events@yarrarangesathletics.org.au

We hope to see you everyone back on Saturday, where we will do everything we can to make it possible for fun, smiles and PB choccy frogs to be earned!! We are also hopeful that we have no further interruptions to our winter racing and can continue to host Cross Country every week from here to September.

Lockdown ends, back to training, XC to come soon..

A brief message from the President

I am so excited to finally announce that we can get back to training from Friday morning.

No doubt everyone will be very excited to see each other and find their little piece of “normal” again. This lockdown was sudden and caught many off-guard, and personally I am beyond ready to get back on the trails at Silvan!

While we are not yet able to host our Saturday morning Cross Country competition, outdoor training can resume – though the recent cold weather may not be the most inviting!

Our coaches will communicate via the Yarra Ranges Athletics Clubhouse Facebook page when and where they will be training again.

We will be paying close attention to government, LAV, and AV recommendations to ensure a COVID safe experience for everybody, and if anything changes quickly we will let our members know as soon as possible via the Clubhouse page. Attached at the link below is the full list of updated restrictions from the Victorian government, correct at 9/06/2021. Click here.

On a slightly different note, the second round of the Victoria’s ‘Get Active Kids Voucher Program’ opened on the May 31st. If your family has a health care card or pensioner concession card you may be eligible for $200 to help your child play sport – it’s worth a look!

Our club has also just been the lucky recipient of a grant from the Victorian government, part of the Sporting Club Grants program. We have been given $1000 to put towards our equipment, and it has been decided by the committee for use in replacing our aging shot puts and discus sets.

Thank you everybody for your continued patience and diligence, I look forward to seeing you all down at YRA XC in coming weeks.
