Round 4

Saturday morning again offered up fantastic conditions for our Yarra Ranges and Croydon athletes for Round 4 of the cross country season at Elizabeth Bridge Reserve in Kilsyth.

With all 4 rounds of the cross country season thus far attracting 120+ runners, this weekend’s round proved to be our largest turnout yet with 135 finishers across 5 races for the morning.

On a fast but deceptively tough course, all runners pushed themselves hard to set a time to try to beat next time we run the course.

Next week we return to Morrison Reserve for our first opportunity to push for a new PB. Chocolate frogs are on offer for those that smash their PB this weekend, so make sure you come on down and have a crack!

Knox Open Day

Knox Little Athletics Cross Country Open Day is Saturday May 22nd. There will be no YRA Cross Country at our venues. Please register for the Knox Open Day.

We encourage all Little Athletics registered athletes to join us at the Knox Open Day.

When racing other clubs, wear the YRA colours. We can lend you singlets.

Help us keep the Perpetual trophy!!

Details on how to register are here.

President’s Report

Hi everyone! I just wanted to send out a massive thank you to the small group of volunteers that helped out at the canteen last week for SSV’s athletics meet, it is fantastic to see our community willing to engage and help out where needed.

I would like to again call on everyone to lend a hand at YRA, our club and the events we run are operated entirely by unpaid volunteers who are passionate about aths. We are so grateful for their continued diligence in ensuring that everyone, young or old, can enjoy athletics and cross country.

We are looking for a few people to help out on the Welcome Desk/Results Table this weekend at Morrison Reserve, it makes the time fly by. Even I was able to do it! The more helpers that we have, the more time we can all spend out running!

I hope everyone is able to find a PB this weekend because the chocolate frogs will be coming out! Helpers don’t fear, I think we can spare one or two for you too!

We will be having our first official committee meeting next Wednesday evening and we welcome visitors, please email the committee if you would like to attend or there is a matter that is important for us to discuss. We represent the YRA community and hence it is important that we have a broad view of what matters to our members.

Feel free to contact the committee at committee@yarrarangesathletics, or myself at president@yarrarangesathletics.org.au

XCR success as cross country season warms up

Nearly 18 months to the day since the last round of Athletics Victoria XCR in 2019, YRA athletes welcomed back one of the favourite team events of the year. The opening round of XCR was once again back at Jells Park for the cross country relays.

Open age athletes completed 2 laps of the testing 3km circuit as it wound its way up and down the parklands of Jells Park. Our junior athletes completed one lap each.

Stars of the day were our U18 Women’s team of Maddie Laven, Mia Strudley and Kiara Flavel winning their age group.

Our top men’s and women’s teams had good days finishing 2nd and 4th in their respective divisions, Fastest over 6km on the day were James Laven (19.21) and Kellie Emerson (23.13). Fastest 3km runners were Maddie Laven (10.55) and Angus Norman (10.36)

A big shout out to Tynan Mims, Thierry Lamarque, Ash Bennett, Mike Willey, Jamie Pointon, Ky Harris, Bailey Van Bert, Mitch Pointon, Ciara Willey and Zoe Clarke, 10 athletes who competed in their first XCR event for Yarra Ranges.

Cross Country

Our Saturday cross country event continued on a new course at Margaret Lewis Reserve. Another deceptively challenging course that tested the fitness of a few athletes.

Everyone enjoyed the sunshine and the opportunity post a marker for the PB choccie frogs next time.

Next Saturday morning we will be at Elizabeth Bridge Reserve in Kilsyth.

Australian Track & Field Championships

Six very talented Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes represented their state and club at the Australian track & field championships in Sydney last week. These championships showcased most of Australia’s best athletes as they attempted to qualify for the Olympics.

Stand out performance came from Kiara Flavel who, placed an impressive 4th in her 1500m final, and then two days later placed first in Australia as a U17 for 800m. Congratulations Kiara and congratulations to all other Yarra Ranges athletes who competed.

Cross Country Week 1

Saturday morning provided fantastic conditions, with a dry, clear and mild weather greeting the athletes from Yarra Ranges Athletics and Croydon Little Athletics for Week 1 of the new Cross Country season. The energy was high, after missing the entire 2020 season, runners were keen to test themselves on the hills of Morrison Reserve.

A new course for 2021 provided a fresh challenge and a revised finish, which gave everyone a fast downhill, was thoroughly enjoyed by all after the hard work of the uphill sections. Across all age groups there were excellent numbers, with over 20 runners in each field, and the strong running showed the athletes had been maintaining their fitness for the longer races.

No doubt, there will be eagerness for the return to Lillydale Lake for Week 2.

(Time for Q&A regarding any club activities and plans is available at the end of formalities)

CRUCIAL: We MUST fill the position of President at the AGM.

Other executive positions require filling at the meeting, however voting and/or selection of those positions will not occur until a President has been elected and confirmed. The role of President is no longer an onerous, hands on position due to the work the Committee has done over the last 12 months to create Portfolios and divest the workload (see Background information attached). It requires a person with good communication and people management skills comfortable knowing the support teams are getting the job done.

We encourage all our members to consider if they may be able to perform this role.  We also encourage any possible president nominees to contact our most recent president, Michael Clarke on 0403 819 390 to further discuss what is required.

If you do not feel comfortable taking on the role of president then please consider one of the 19 other positions that need you which include:

  • Executive position (Vice President – LA & AV, Secretary, Treasurer)
  • General committee  – refer Background information attached

For more information on specific roles and tasks, please e-mail president@yarrarangesathletics.org.au or call Jamie on 0402 233 677.

  • Nominations for the Executive positions must be in writing or via email.
  • A member may nominate themself, or with consent be nominated by another member.
  • Nominations for Executive and General committee positions must be received by the secretary 48 hours prior to the AGM.
  • If no nominations are received nominations will be called from the floor.
  • Should a member fail to be elected to the nominated position, the member may nominate for any other position for which an election is still to be held.
  • Where only one nomination is received, the member is declared the elected member.
  • Where 2 or more nominations are received for the Executive committee a ballot will be held.
  • Where 15 or more nominations are received for the general committee a ballot will be held.
  • Nominations must state the applicants name, date of nomination, position of nomination and where nomination is presented by consent, the name of the presenting member.
  • Nominating members must be 18 years or over for committee positions.

Any Special Resolution must be received no later than 14 days prior to the AGM as per the Incorporate Rules.

If you have any questions please contact Jamie Strudley (0402233677) or any of our committee members.

A copy of the latest YRA incorporated rules and By-Laws are attached.

Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes had a busy weekend of athletics as club athletes enjoyed another fun
filled twilight round, 18 athletes proudly represented the club at the Victorian Little Athletics Track &

Our eighteen qualifiers to State Champs competed exceptionally well. Saturday saw some tough

All our athletes should be proud of the results and hopefully enjoyed competing on the new track at Lakeside Stadium.
