Weekly Newsletter – December 1

Vic Milers

The spiritual “Home of PBs,” Hagenaeur Reserve in Box Hill put on quite the show last Thursday with the first meet of Vic Milers Club. For the uninitiated, VMC run meets in the evening during the summer season occasionally, and there is no other place to try and knock off a PB!

With some precise seeding, almost all of our distance crew walked away with PBs for a night well spent. YRA was represented by 16 athletes and all enjoyed the evening watching each other race.

YRA Winter Athletics Cross Country Season 2021

Our local club season of Cross Country was cut short by lockdowns this year. Despite the uncertainty at different times, we hosted 10 rounds of Cross Country, with at least 2 races at each of our 4 venues. Once again, this season Croydon Athletics Club joined us for 2021. We also had good participation from most age groups at Knox Open Day, resulting in several individual and team medals, but most of all smiles and cheers for YRA athletes. After missing a complete season in 2020 we were grateful for what racing could happen, realising that when we can’t host races, we miss all the smiles, friendship and strong competition that our Yarra Ranges kids bring to each day of Cross Country.

Participant numbers for our winter Cross Country are rising each year. This years shortened season saw 187 individuals recording almost 1000 race results. More than 100 finishers were seen at 7 rounds. It shows that the program that we bring during Winter is attractive and successful. Thanks to our families that enjoy a Saturday morning run, particularly those who invite family and friends, helping to introduce new families and athletes to our Winter season.

Unfortunately, the regular Region and State competitions were cancelled. Knox Open Day was the highlight competition of the winter season for Yarra Ranges. Because of the dedicated athletes who showed up to race in our club colours we managed to retain the trophy for the 7th year! Waverley Athletics club were out in force and the points swung between the 2 clubs all morning. With 1 race to go our U8’s stormed home to win the Trophy! A wonderful day was had in the sunshine by all. 36 athletes, 6 team medals and 9 individual podium places. What a great club!

Every week there is a large group of volunteers that set up the Cross Country course and help our athletes. Thank you to Mr Cross Country, our very own Rob Belli who we have missed during the summer months when he has been working for Little Athletics as the development officer. Our early morning crew, Mike Willey, Alan Harris, Joel Johnson, Russell Van Bert and Michael Clarke helped to set the course ready for the fun. To our marshals, tag givers, recorders, welcome crew and flag retrievers. Thank you for a wonderful Cross Country season in 2021. Onwards to Summer Track and Field and we hope to see more smiling faces and PB’s in the coming year!

Two Bays Car Park Fundraiser

Cape Schanck – Sunday 16th January

This will be the 6th year we have managed this and it is the best one day fundraiser that we do.

We raise over $2000 which goes directly to the club, but we need members to come and help either direct cars to park or be on the gate to take the $5 car parking fee.

The area is a one way in and out and about 400-500 cars are directed on the day.

If you are available to help, we offer a small amount to cover petrol and/or food costs on the day. We need about 5 people from 6am in the morning and an additional 3 from 9am till about 1pm.

If you can help for a couple of hours please get in touch with Katie Clarke on 0403 819391. It is a beautiful part of the world to explore when your shift is over.

Big Thank you!!

This Saturday

This week’s program is program 1 with some changes with the returns of throws for all ages. Please check the clubhouse page for more information in coming days.

We are delaying the Combined round by a week as some groups haven’t had a chance to compete in events that make up the Combined Events program.

We will plan for Combined to take place the 11 December and Program 2 on the 18th December.

The Combined Event! It is a points based competition just like you see at the Olympics in the decathlon and heptathlon – just modified for our young athletes.

Each age group will complete between 5 and 7 events. The results from each event scores points. These points are tallied to determine the overall event winners.

Every second and every centimetre counts – encourage your athletes to do their best on the day.

Results will be collated and all athletes will receive a certificate to show their event details and points scored.

Scoring is based on completing all events in the program.

Any athletes that complete fewer events cannot be placed higher in the overall results than an athlete with all events scored.
