Little Athletics Round 2

Week two of Little Athletics was a steeplechase, with a number of obstacles requiring clearing before we could get underway. Power outages, unfriendly weather and some key parent helpers unavailable, however the committee, parents and most importantly the athletes all came together and we managed to give the kids a few races and some relay fun.

We actually had an increase in numbers from week one, which given the weather was an awesome effort. With rain preventing High Jump and Long Jump and the resurfacing work impacting the throwing events, it was a day for the runners, with 2 sprints, a middle distance run and some relay fun. It was great to see the athletes encouraging others age groups in between events and enjoying the relay activities. We plan to incorporate relays into the program regularly this summer. Our under 9’s ran their first 800m, and Under 7’s their first 300m. It was great to see these groups tackle new distances and set a time to try a beat next time.

We move to program 3 this week, our last in the 3 week cycle. Week 4 is Club v Club day so start thinking about some colourful outfits, with bonus points awarded to the best/craziest dressed clubs.

This weekend we will be needing a bit more help in the canteen, if you would be able to help, even for half an hour, just pop up and say hi!

Go Yarra Ranges! See everyone this Saturday!

Seniors

A massive congratulations to our Seniors who returned to Doncaster or Duncan MacKinnon athletics tracks for the inaugural round of AVSL for the 21/22 Season. Despite the wintery weather’s best attempts to keep everyone away, this enthusiastic group of 14 athletes went down and had a go anyway!

YRA is excited to welcome Emilie Garside and Rori Jones into the squad. Emilie and Rori both debuted last weekend at AVSL and we wish them the best of luck with the rest of their season!

In other exciting news, Noah Wright broke through the fabled 2 minute barrier over 800 metres, running a HUGE 1:57.4. Noah, congratulations!!

Over the coming weeks we look forward to seeing more of our crew down and racing. Make sure have a look at AthsVic’s website for some of the upcoming specialist meets, if you have a PB to knock off then these are the best places have a try!
