Cross Country – Round 5 – 20 May 2023

Lillydale Lake
We are looking forward once again to host 16 rounds of local Cross Country races this winter.
This e-mail has been sent to all families registered with us from the recently completed Summer season.
If you don’t want to be kept informed about events during the winter, simply reply “No Cross Country” & we hope to see you again from September 2023.
A few dates for all registered athletes, even if you choose not to run the weekly races with us.
Knox Open Day – June 17th
Region Cross Country – July 29th
State Cross Country – August 12th (must have a finish time at Region CC to enter)
If you are planning to run with us for Cross Country, a few things to keep in mind.
If it’s in the calendar – we run!!
Regularly, the conditions are magnificent and perfect for running.
It can get Cold, Wet & Muddy – it’s always on (unless decisions relating to safety need to be made).
For those new to Cross Country, a few questions you may have will be answered here. Frequently Asked Questions
YRA – ROUND 1 – APRIL 22ND – From 8.30am – Lillydale Lake (north side of the playground)
XCR’23 – Round 1 – Jells Park Relays (Ages 12+ to Masters). www.athsvic.org.au
Changes for 2023:
Not many. We’ll function as we have done for many years.
Courses – will be marked, flagged, mapped.
Hares (leaders) – provided for 500m & 1000m. Other races only if suitably speedy runners available.
Tortoises (followers) – ALL races.
Marshals – required for ALL races. If we don’t have allocated helpers, we’ll shorten courses based on available helpers.
Radios – anyone helping on course away from Start/Finish will have one.
Duties / Helpers / Qualified Athletes:
Cross Country (like all sports) can only function with sufficient help. Everyone is busy, but unless everyone does their fair share, the overall enjoyment is reduced for those doing all the work.
2023 will see the introduction of pre-commitment to the needed helper tasks for each week. It will be posted several weeks in advance, so you can lock yourself in for any favourite tasks.
Why? – too often it’s a bit of a scramble on the morning to gather helpers. Safety is vital for young athletes. Particularly marshals must be in place to allow a race to start.
Athlete Qualification: BOTH athlete participation and parent helper duty will qualify athletes for Presentation Day / Handicap Day / Centre Championships.
Exact levels of help haven’t been finalised, but work on roughly half the weeks.
If you help every 2nd week you are doing your fair share!!
How?: Sign-up prior to the next Cross Country
Round 1 – Lillydale Lake – 22/4
Round 2 – Coldstream – 29/4
Round 3 – Kilsyth – 6/5
If you can help for the whole morning, choose an ALL RACES option.
If you can only help for some of the morning – before / during / after particular races, select the races you can help.
